Additional Information

I have been a pediatrician in Rapid City, South Dakota, for twenty years. After having a gender non-conforming patient come into the office, I realized that my knowledge in this area was woefully lacking. I started researching LGBT+ issues and reaching out to the community to try to learn more. The more I learned, the more I saw that this is a crucial issue that is being openly dismissed or ignored. Medical providers are not being educated on how to treat, help, and communicate with a significant population of our patients. This contributes to the sense of isolation and invalidation that these youth feel. As people who have dedicated their lives to helping our patients, we should be at the forefront of these issues, not hiding in the back. Particularly in South Dakota, young people need medical providers that are on their side. For the past five years that the Human Rights Campaign has published their State Equality Index, South Dakota has been rated as one of the lowest states in basic equality. Community Health Center of the Black Hills has a long tradition of being supportive of their LGBTQ+ patients, so the Iris Clinic for LGBTQ+ youth was a natural extension of the clinic’s policy to care for those marginalized by our society. I am honored to be allowed to be a small part of someone’s journey!
